Value of life

A question being asked on net like this ` A embryo and a toddler, if you only can save one life and sacrifice another, who would you save?' Such question probes into our mind about value of life.

I would save toddler over embryo because toddler is a human product which have been invested more in term of time, energy, money and care. So it is cost effective to save toddler. If the choice is between toddler and 80 y old retiree, I would save toddler over old, again for the same reason of potential human investment return. We make this kind of decision all the time. Human capital is related its value to your family and society. It is like investment. Sound pretty cold blooded but it is true.
Most valuable human lifes are those between 18 to 60 who are the productive member of society. People's grief is greatest over life lost between these age ranges. The very young and very old death cause less grief.
